The devastating effect of Tropical Storm Allison was an unprecedented calamity for Houston’s performing arts organizations in the city’s thriving downtown. Storm waters severely damaged—and in some cases destroyed—auditoriums, musical instruments, costumes, props and offices. As the insurance provider for most of Houston’s nonprofit organizations, Wortham stepped in and successfully steered our clients through the difficult process of recording their damages, filing claims and working with underwriters. The result: The city’s performing arts groups quickly resumed their business of entertaining their audiences with the wonder of art, music and theater.

Taking a different approach from most insurance brokers, more than a decade ago Wortham created a department that focused solely on nonprofit organizations. Today, Wortham serves more than 150 nonprofit organizations, including performing and fine arts groups, foundations, social services providers, private universities, business trade and homeowners associations, private clubs and charities. We have established a meaningful franchise in the nonprofit sector and, in fact, are among a very small group of brokers in the U.S. that have a significant presence in this growing area.

At Wortham, we have gained considerable expertise in the unique insurance and risk management complexities faced by nonprofit groups. In addition to traditional coverages such as commercial general liability, commercial property, business automobile and workers compensation, our staff is experienced in developing policies for directors and officers liability, volunteer protection, fundraising and other special events hosted by nonprofit organizations. On behalf of our clients, we also handle coordination with local governmental agencies to facilitate events in city-owned properties.

To serve our communities, Wortham’s staff also participates in seminars and workshops to help educate nonprofit organizations, their senior management and boards about insurance issues and trends.
